I recently spent some time on airplanes and in airports and I used my alone time to devour several magazines; a luxury I don't usually have. Yes, I read one gossipy, celebrity rag, but the others were more of the home décor type. I read every page of these magazines, and this is what I have to report regarding decorating for the holidays:
-
Au Naturale: If it once grew in dirt outside it will work; cuttings from evergreen trees, leaves, bare branches, moss, flowers, pinecones, acorns, berries, fruit, etc.; cover wreaths, tuck in bowls, paint, add to mantles, chandeliers or doors; hang on trees or put in vases, pots or stockings.
-
Make it Shine: Add glitter to anything and everything for more glamour. Buy cheap ornaments, gather pinecones, re-do outdated decorations; just add glitter; apparently German glass glitter is hot!
-
Word Up: Old sheet music and pages from books are hip. Use them for making cute crafts like paper trees, wreaths, ornaments and tree toppers; cut out napkin rings, glue together for a unique table runner and more. You just have to find old books or sheet music that no one cares about ripping apart.
-
Mix It Up: Don't be afraid to add colors that don't traditional belong at your holiday gatherings; or replace green with teal or red with magenta, etc. Have fun with the color scheme; use the colors that make you happy; and
-
Homemade Holidays: You can do these things yourself. Don't go to the high dollar department store or trendy boutique or antique dealer, just go for a hike through the woods or the dollar store or the thrift shop and a craft store or your own craft closet and get out the scissors and the glue gun and start creating.
I found inspiration in these pages and have already begun to gather my materials and ideas for our homemade, sparkly, natural holidays! What do you like to make during this season of decking the halls? Over and out...
